Nowadays if you have a ’55 Chevy you can get parts at a vintage car and truck parts supplier. Of course if you’re into custom stuff you get what you need at a custom car part and accessory supplier. For this car you can get aftermarket car parts no problem. Things were different back in the 1960’s when I first started to drive. For one thing there was no internet. You had to drive down to the custom car part and accesory store and take the time to look at whatever they had. When I was a young guy I learned how to repair cars. At the time I had a '55 Chevy Bel Aire; 2 door hardtop. It was the first car I ever worked on. It had an exceptional interior. I was lucky to have found this car as it was; I really didn't have a lot of money and couldn’t afford to buy a custom car part and accessory; I only paid $250.00 for the car! It was 1964 when I bought that car; it was so new you wouldn't even think of looking for parts in a vintage car and truck parts store. No...You either bought parts from the dealer or went to the "junk yard”. But this was my first challenge fixing cars. Up to that point the most significant repair I did was to replace the rings on one of the pistons in my Chevy 265 cu.in. V-8 engine. Now I began a project of taking the engine out of my 4 door Chevy and putting it into my new '55 Chevy. I did everything including changing the car from automatic transmission to a 3 speed overdrive transmission with a Hurst shifter on the floor. After I got the car together mechanically I then repaired the rust spots and minor damages to the body and painted it. It came out great and it was one of the most satisfying experiences of my whole life up to that point. I started my learning by buying a book called Motors Repair Manual. Let me tell you it was very time-consuming tracking down parts for that car. If you wanted to buy an aftermarket car part you could take your JC Whitney Catalog
and mail in an order. Nowadays JC Whitney is still supplying aftermarket car parts except it's all online and as they did back in the old days they also supply any kind of custom car part and accesory you could imagine.
